Excitement/Non-Excitement

In News on July 16, 2008 by Gaizabonts

The headline read impressive: No 70:30 quota in Mumbai colleges- Hindustan Times

Of course, you had to read the entire article, before you got all excited. Depending on which side of the reservation you are, of course. And then, this.

“On Monday, Advocate General Ravi Kadam informed Bombay High Court of the state’s decision, explaining that the government had decided not to implement the circular as there was a lot of confusion among students and teachers regarding its implementation. ‘The government will study various factors and may implement it next year,’ he said. “: No 70:30 quota in Mumbai colleges- Hindustan Times

Ah, well, just when you thought there was hope, the only thing that seems to have happened is a delay. Sigh!

‘No ghosts on my news channel’- Hindustan Times

In News on January 20, 2008 by Gaizabonts

“Content is my primary concern. The guidelines we have set are very clear. First, we won’t start a media trial on hearsay. Any news that goes has to be authenticated,” Prasad told IANS in an interview.

“Guideline number two is that no ghosts or dramatised versions of ghosts on the channel. I don’t want any story saying a ghost was seen in so and so village,” she added.

This is one channel that is going to struggle for TRPs. No sensationalism and stupidity? How does she plan to keep it afloat?

Typical of HT (and other Newspapers)

In News, Odd on January 18, 2008 by Gaizabonts

A consultant psychiatrist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Khandelwal records fascinating vignettes of daily life at himalayanadventurer.blogspot.com. He writes about the effects of static electricity that result in ‘powerful’ handshakes, eccentric food habits, hikes on the ice shelf and the saga of a Skua bird family nesting near the station.

Indian blogs live from Antarctica for the first time- Hindustan Times

Why is it so difficult to have that blogspot URL as a link in the article? This was a web-based article. And all that is web-based is better when it is hypertext. Go digital, but continue thinking paper. Classic , innit?

It is not too difficult. Here, see how you create a link to a blog: http://himalayanadventurer.blogspot.com

No Shakes

In today’s news:

But the actor did not interact with the media or shake hands with any of the policemen.

Thank God for that, that would have been worse than the crimes he was convicted for. Absolutely non-bailable stuff. Lucky Sanjay – saved himself from going back again.

Where’s my Gphone?

In News on November 20, 2007 by Gaizabonts

It will be interesting to see where the iPhone fits in. Apple is not a partner in this. Also interesting to see whether folks will vote for functionality over design? Then again, after seeing the HTC Touch, design, it seems, will not be limited to a single phone!

Despite all of the very interesting speculation over the last few months, we’re not announcing a Gphone. However, we think what we are announcing — the Open Handset Alliance and Android — is more significant and ambitious than a single phone. In fact, through the joint efforts of the members of the Open Handset Alliance, we hope Android will be the foundation for many new phones and will create an entirely new mobile experience for users, with new applications and new capabilities we can’t imagine today.

Simple, Ban Television!

In News, Odd on October 31, 2007 by Gaizabonts

“There is a significant association between hours of television watched and both the severity of obesity and the presence of hypertension in obese children,” Dr Jeffrey Schwimmer of the University of California, San Diego and colleagues wrote in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Perhaps it has got to to do with all the obesity news? Sorry. I can’t write any further. Have to get off the floor and stop laughing!

Now, now, now…

In News, Odd on October 21, 2007 by Gaizabonts

It wasn’t the monkeys, and even you know that.

When you say, Monkeys Kill Delhi Deputy Mayor, you don’t really mean it, do you? Obviously the guy fell down from a terrace and died.

SS Bajwa suffered serious head injuries when he fell from the first-floor terrace of his home on Saturday morning trying to fight off the monkeys.

Delhi Deputy Mayor dies due to fall, while (or should that be ‘after’) fighting monkeys, is a much better headline. But then, who has the space, who has the space…

Imagine, for RSS readers worldwide, you might actually imagine that the Dep. Mayor of the Capital of the seventh largest country fights monkeys.

Ah…well.

Show Me the Money

In News, Odd on October 11, 2007 by Gaizabonts Tagged: , ,

So Mukesh Ambani, in spite of the split is set to become the richest Indian ever. In another news, China apparently has 108 billionaires.

So, do these guys really have the money? I mean really? E.g. Could they (Real Q is “would they”) actually liquidate all their assets one fine day and say to the world, well, I just needed (and have all) the cash?

Rod Tidwell, you listening? You have a question?

Gender-biased Outsourcing

In News, Odd on September 12, 2007 by Gaizabonts

If you have it in you to ride the galloping wave in the Indian Outsourcing Ocean, then you cannot have missed what Maria Arbatova had to say about bachelor outsourcing.

The import of eligible bachelors from India is my big geopolitical idea

It’s a fair idea, I’d say, except if some of the get-the-women-votes kind of politicians are also reading this. It is a fair idea, but not fair to the fairer sex. (Is that phrase allowed nowadays?) The concept of fairer sex will anyway be a confusing one for the coming generations – what with all the fairness creams for men. But I digress.

I believe, that the above mentioned politicians in India won’t quite like it. I can think of two reasons, am not sure which one will hold more weight.

One, the men that the women here rightly deserve (oh, just by geographical proximity and such) will dwindle and there may be fierce competition. Two, they will want equality in this too – why this bias in the economic gain? Find us a country where we could export women too!

The second reason has more meat, in any case the insensitive Indian male is better off in insensitive Siberia.

She also says:

Attracting Indian bachelors to Russia should be a government policy, she argues, or Russia will soon have two crosses to bear – one of its own male deaths and the other of the Chinese birth rate.

What visa category would apply, I wonder?

Anything is Honourable

In News on August 6, 2007 by Gaizabonts

When I read this news item: Italian Official Bans Honorary Degrees, Saying Celebrity Recipients Bring Dishonor

Citing the need to protect the “prestige” of Italy’s university system, the country’s higher-education minister, Fabio Mussi, ordered its 66 public universities on Wednesday to stop granting honorary degrees for the rest of the year.

I wished the UK would do it too.

Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty has been given an honorary degree for her handling of the Big Brother race row.

The Indian actress, 32, was awarded a doctorate of arts by Leeds Metropolitan University for her “dignity and poise”.

Shilpa Shetty said later on:

“I can see the pride in her eyes because she’s always wanted me to graduate.”

Ah well.
